Laboratory for Processing and Characterization of Ceramic Materials

b. Purpose:

Synthesis and characterization of ceramic materials.

c. Activities

Researchers of the Ceramics Division carry out synthesis, processing and characterization procedures in this laboratory. The lab is equipped for the synthesis by means of different methods, such as mixed oxides, sol-gel and solvothermal. A teflon-lined stainless-steel reactor is used for solvothermal syntheses under a maximum autogenous pressure of 16bar. High pressure facilities for the supercritical drying of samples are also available. The usual equipment for the processing of powders (mills, sieves, press, furnaces) is found in this lab, as well as dip-coating and spraying apparatus for the deposition of coatings and thin films.

The synthesized or prepared materials can be characterized by means of the techniques listed below.

  • Polishing machines (Marex 151 and Praxis)

  • Ovens, muffles and furnaces up to 1700ºC
  • UV lamp (Spectroline EBF-280C/FE)
